Club Members Awarded $152,000 in College Scholarships

Boys & Girls Clubs of the Midlands (BGCM) awards $152,000 in college scholarships to 50 BGCM seniors and alumni as a commitment to enabling its members, especially those who need them most, to reach their full potential as healthy, productive, caring and responsible members of society.

Inspired by this commitment, BGCM established a scholarship program in 1986 designed to benefit active members of the Clubs and alumni who plan to further their academic and vocational education in order to develop their potential abilities.

“BGCM’s ability to provide these 50 scholarships to Club members is the result of so many people’s commitment to the mission and vision of Boys & Girls Clubs. The communities they choose to build their lives in will be enriched because of what we do here,” Keith Bushardt, Executive Board Member and Chair of the BGCM Scholarship Committee said.

The 2016 Scholarship Luncheon will take place Monday, July 11 at 11 a.m. at the North Omaha Boys & Girls Club, located at 2610 Hamilton Street, with special guest speaker Trev Alberts, University of Nebraska at Omaha Athletic Director.

In January, BGCM hired Jermaine Jones as Vice President of Community & Scholarship Outreach. Jones is a North Omaha Boys & Girls Club alum, former scholarship recipient and intern. He is responsible for growing BGCM’s Scholarship Program and implementing an Internship Program for scholarship recipients. Jones has a great appreciation for what these types of opportunities can provide for young people.

“Our scholarship program will continue to grow over the next several years, providing substantial financial assistance for our Club members pursuing post-secondary education,” Jones said. “The scholarship recipients will then have the opportunity to be part of an internship program which will offer real life, on the job experiences.”

Sponsors of the scholarship program include CenturyLink, Hawkins Family Scholarship, A.V. Sorensen, Charles E. & Florence Lakin Good Citizen Scholarship, Morton A. Richards Scholarship Fund, G. Robert Muchemore Foundation, Officer Tye Pratt Memorial Scholarship, Paul Stella Memorial Scholarship, Heider Scholarship, Corporal Shane Kielion Memorial Scholarship, Fred Arkoosh Jr. Memorial Scholarship, John & Harriet Wiebe Good Citizen Scholarship, Douglas County Sherriff Scholarship and Officer Kerrie Orozco Memorial Scholarship.

My life and my family's foundation was established at the Boys Clubs back in the late 60's. My mother believed in what the Club meant in our lives and I will celebrate my 35th year in the Movement this year. I am so honored to have learned from the some of the best men around…Bill Hinckley, Tom Davis, Ike Snell, Dwight Day, Fred Schott, Don Preister, Maurice Lambert, Lonnie McIntosh, Walter Henderson, Wayne Houston and Bob Solonynka.
