On Thursday, November 20, the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Midlands (BGCM) hosted the 7th Annual Stock Market Championship® at the Hilton Omaha, raising over $100,000. Stock Market Championship® is a real-life stock market simulation fundraising event in which four-person teams from the area’s business community compete. Teams buy, sell and trade fictional stock from local and national companies as they vie for the title of “Stock Market Champion.”The evening kicked off with gourmet pasta, h’ourdourves and cocktails at 5:30pm. Ivan Gilreath, BGCM’s President & CEO, welcomed our community business team sponsors and friends and 8 of our Boys & Girls Clubs kids teams, followed by the ringing of the bell at 6:30pm which signaled the opening of the trading floor. UNO’s College of Business was instrumental in funding and creating the software for Stock Market Championship®. “It is such an honor for me to be able to help organize an event that is not only fun and exciting for guests, but truly making a difference,” said Jonna Holland, Ph.D., of UNO’s College of Business & Administration. “Stock Market Championship promotes friendly competition, teaches the kids financial literacy, and brings awareness to the Clubs and our community’s youth that are in need.” The Stock Market Championship® top 3 adult team winners from the evening were as follows: TCM Energizers (Tenaska), 1st place; Tenaska Marketing Ventures, 2nd place; Kuehl Capital Corporation, 3rd place. The winning team for the Club kids division was Morton Boys & Girls Club’s Panther 3, taking home $2,000 in scholarship funds from NEST for each team member. “NEST is proud to support Boys and Girls Clubs of the Midlands by presenting $8000 in college savings scholarships to the winning youth team in the annual Stock Market Championship,” said Deborah Goodkin, Managing Director, College Savings Plans at First National Bank of Omaha. “We are continually impressed by the talent and spirit of the kids competing in the championship, which reflects the impact Boys and Girls Clubs has had on their lives. On behalf of NEST and First National Bank of Omaha, I would like to congratulate this year’s winners.” Other highlights from the evening include a special Boys & Girls Clubs video, a live auction for mentoring and trading services for the evening, and an enthusiastic “Great Futures Start Here” chant at halftime from the Boys & Girls Club team members.
