Red Friday

Red Friday Celebration

We had a great time hanging out with some well-known faces from the Kansas City Chiefs and raising money for the Clubs during this September’s Red Friday! Red Friday is a day-long celebration that captures the excitement of the start of the Chiefs football season. Communities throughout Chiefs Kingdom come together to show their spirit and to make a difference in the lives of local children.

Red Friday is a 26-year tradition started by Chiefs Founder Lamar Hunt and a group of dedicated volunteers, the Red Coaters. On Red Friday fans are encouraged to wear red and get ready to get loud on Sunday for the Chiefs home opener.

Fans also fly a limited-edition Chiefs Kingdom flag, which can be obtained only on Red Friday each year. The flags raise money for local children and youth. A minimum donation of $5 is encouraged for fans wishing to obtain the limited-edition flags, and all proceeds from flag sales benefit local kids. The Omaha-Council Bluffs metropolitan area has been a part of Red Friday for three years, and this year, BGCM was the Kansas City Chiefs’ community partner! All proceeds from this year’s flag sales will benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Midlands.

The celebration started early, with a kickoff event on September 12th at the Hy-Vee Market Grill on 90th and Center. Our members and staff, along with local community members, got to meet Mitch Holthus, the official voice of the Kansas City Chiefs, former Chiefs offensive lineman Chris Bober, Chief Cheerleaders, and KC Wolf, the team’s mascot.

Mr. Holthus, Ivan Gilreath (BGCM’s President & CEO), and Brad Neely from Hy-Vee talked about the history of Red Friday, the Chiefs dedication to helping kids in Chiefs Kingdom communities, and about the Boys & Girls Clubs. Jaime Valadez, BGCM’s 2017 Youth of the Year, shared his personal story of how the Clubs have helped him overcome struggles in his life and pursue his plans for the future. People attending the event enjoyed great food, purchased their flags early, and had the opportunity to win a football signed by Travis Kelce.

On Friday, September 15th BGCM members and staff sold flags at Hy-Vee stores across Omaha and Council Bluffs. We were at Hy-Vee gas stations at 5:00 am! Sales lasted until 7:00 pm. We raised over $8,000

Thank you to everyone who bought a flag, and to all the members who helped out! We are also grateful to our event sponsors: Chesterman Coca-Cola, Hy-Vee, and the Kansas City Chiefs.
