U.S. Cellular announced the three winners of its second annual Black History Month Art Contest with the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Midlands at a Wednesday celebration at the North Omaha Club.
In January, club members created original pieces of artwork in recognition of influential African-Americans that included business people, athletes, historical figures and celebrities. The 10 finalists’ art was displayed at two U.S. Cellular stores in Omaha throughout February, where the community voted for their favorite.
The winning artists were awarded the following prizes:
Aapril B., age 14 of the North Club, received $250 for first place on the Little Girl with Mrs. Obama in Eye creation.
Emilio Avendeno, age 10 of the South Club, picked up $150 for second place with a Martin Luther King drawing.
Janihya Liggins, age 16 of the North Club, earned $100 for third place on the Bob Marley artwork.
“The creativity, talent and knowledge that came through in these kids’ artwork was amazing to see, and it was a privilege to showcase them in our stores during Black History Month,” said Will Rowe, the store manager for U.S. Cellular’s Fudd’s Plaza retail store in Omaha. “Celebrating with the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Midlands youth was a great way to honor our country’s diversity and commemorate African-American icons both past and present.”
U.S. Cellular’s Black History Month Art Contest is funded and supported by the company’s Network of Black Associates, an Associate Resource Group dedicated to creating a diverse company culture that attracts, develops and retains black associates.
