On February 1, 2020, the Henry Davis Bryan Middle Boys & Girls Club attended the FIRST LEGO League Robotics qualifier at Lewis & Clark Middle School in Bellevue, where they were selected as one of 18 teams to move onto the state competition on Saturday, February 22nd at the Strategic Air Command Aerospace Museum. There were 57 teams competing in all.

The FIRST LEGO League is an international robotics competition for elementary and middle school aged children, created to give children an introduction to STEM and solve real world problems. This program is offered through the Clubs as part of the STEM Programming. The Bryan Middle Club Team, known as the “BG Bots” includes an all-girl team of Grace Nilson, Kayloni Turner-Wedemeyer, and Kaitlyn Whitworth. The team was judged on how well their robot, “Bubblez”, performed different tasks. The more complicated the tasks, the more points they earned. BG Bots also presented a project entitled, Recycling Buddies, to judges which discussed an innovative solution to the lack of solid recycling programs within their community.

Lauren Rindfleisch, STEM Director and team coach, had this to say about their advancement, “The entire BGCM community is proud of this hardworking team and can’t wait to see how they do at the State Competition!”

Boys & Girls Clubs hasn’t advanced to the State Lego Robotics Competition in two years.
