Briza’s Story

Once there was a girl who was constantly at home, this girl didn’t have many friends to hang out with nor did she really socialize. Her mom worked tirelessly to provide for her family and her father was never there. So, every day she would come home from school to an empty house not knowing what each day would bring.
This girl was me.

That all changed when I joined the Millard Central Boys & Girls Club. There I met wonderful staff and other members who impacted my life. One of the many things that I love about the Club is the staff. They lent an ear to me when I needed it most. I also enjoy all the fun activities we do like cooking, arts and even field trips! It helps me be productive and enjoy life to the fullest.

The Club has always been a home for me and always will be. I will always cherish those memories I shared with the staff and other members. The Club will always be my family. So, for that, I am proud to say I’m a member at Boys & Girls Clubs of the Midlands.

Wimach’s Story

To begin my story,  my parents are Ethiopian natives. My mother didn’t get the chance to receive an education, and my father came to a country foreign to him to prosper for his family. I remember as a kid I would come home at night and wonder why the lights were off. We lived on a shortage of money. There would be nights where all we had for dinner was sleep.

When I was seven years old, I joined the Council Bluffs Boys & Girls Club. For a long time, I was very quiet. I feared conversations with peers and staff because I didn’t want them to know what my home life was like. Overtime, I was able to connect with the staff. I was able to open up, and one staff in particular became my mentor. He helped me with everything from basketball drills to planning for college. He changed my life.

The Club’s positive influence helped become a two-time State Qualifier in cross-country, a senior class officer, a National Honor Society member and most of all, a better person. The Club has opened my eyes to new opportunities, which has helped develop my confidence to where I know I can reach my fullest potential.
